Senior Scientific Director, Infectious Diseases & Vaccines & Janssen Fellow
Why I'm a JPAL
Having worked in biotechnology companies for the majority of my industry career, I believe I have a good understanding of the pressures and constraints associated with working on limited budgets and with limited resources. Key to success is doing the right science at the right time and to understand Pharma considerations with regard to strategic interest.
Simon received his bachelor’s and graduate degrees from the University of York in England and extended his studies of bacterial DNA replication and gene expression as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at Harvard University. Subsequent independent research was undertaken as a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School on studies of the pathogenic mechanisms of enteric bacterial pathogens. Simon joined Tularik Inc. in 1997 as Project Leader for antibacterial discovery and resulting lead programs were subsequently spun-out into Cumbre Pharmaceuticals Inc. for which he last served as Vice President of Research. During his tenure at Tularik and Cumbre, Simon directed programs that led to the discovery of several novel antibacterial agents including a series of hybrid antibiotics currently in clinical development. Simon joined Janssen R&D in 2008 and through 2013 led microbiology teams focused on the support of antibiotic products and bacterial vaccines in discovery and early clinical development. Simon subsequently led a Janssen Incubator focused on the development of novel biologic agents for the treatment and prevention of serious staphylococcal infections and currently leads an R&D group focused on the discovery and development on novel antibacterial modalities. Simon has authored or co-authored over forty peer reviewed publications, review articles and book chapters, and is an inventor on multiple issued patents.
"Some (wo)men see things as they are, and ask why, I dream of things that never were, and ask why not."
- George Bernard Shaw
I was supposed to be a professional trumpet player but go distracted by science along the way.
