Scientific Engagement Lead
Sean Evans is the Scientific Engagement Lead for Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS @ US North East (NYC, Boston, & Philadelphia). In this newly created role, he is responsible for external engagement with regional academic research institutions, start-ups and investment partners and portfolio management. He also collaborates with Johnson & Johnson Innovation colleagues in sourcing and evaluating innovative companies to foster a productive life science ecosystem and bring value to Johnson & Johnson’s pipeline.
Sean joined Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS from Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), where he was most recently Director of Business Development & Alliances. Sean spent over seven years within JHTV evaluating early-stage life science academic innovation, supporting the JHU life science startup ecosystem, as well as establishing a variety of university-industry research collaborations focused on co-developing novel therapeutics, diagnostics and medical devices. Outside of his role at JHU, Sean also co-founded a biotech company, Cogentis Therapeutics, focused on developing a therapeutic solution for neurodegenerative disorders. Prior to JHU and starting a company, Sean spent two years in Tanzania as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching biology and math to high school students.
Sean received an M.S. in Biotechnology and a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (2014) from Johns Hopkins University. In his doctoral program, Sean’s work focused on better understanding mechanisms used by HIV aimed to overcome the host innate response to infection. His work culminated in the discovery and characterization of a novel host factor critical for viral infectivity. His work has been published in several leading journals, including Nature and Cell Reports.
