JLABS | Profile - Emma Taylor from Naked Biome

What is the problem you're trying to solve?

Naked Biome is developing antibiotic alternatives to combat global antibiotic resistance and identify novel therapeutic opportunities to treat skin disease. Our current focus is developing a live biologic therapeutic to treat and prevent acne.

How is what you're doing different than other attempts to solve this problem?

All other companies that are developing bacterial based acne therapies still kill Propionibacterium acnes, and function as biologic antibiotics. They are subject to the same selective pressures as conventional antibiotics that lead to resistance.Instead of killing Propionibacterium acnes, Naked Biome is redelivering a continuous supply of healthy Propionibacterium acnes to outcompete and replace pathogenic strains and restore to a healthy microbiome.

Why are you passionate about what you're working on?

Live biologic therapeutics have the potential to redefine how we treat and manage skin disease.Eliminating our heavy dependence on antibiotics would be paradigm shifting. We hope that our research will lead to a growth of knowledge about how we define, maintain, and restore a healthy microbiome.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Taking a leap of faith in leaving a secure high paying salary at an academic center and moving my entire family to San Francisco to build Naked Biome.
