What is the problem you're trying to solve?
We are developing a medical treatment for cataracts, based on a small molecule that can correct protein folding in the lens to restore lens transparency without the need for surgery.
How is what you're doing different than other attempts to solve this problem?
Cataracts are currently only treatable with surgery. Historical attempts to develop a medical preventative strategy or treatment have addressed only one of many causes of damage to lens proteins, but our mechanism addresses the fundamental and most general problem.
Why are you passionate about what you're working on?
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, with a tremendous impact on quality of life in developing geographies, and a safe and effective nonsurgical treatment would be truly transformative around the world.
What achievement are you most proud of?
I'm most proud of building a team of brilliant scientists, consultants, and business leaders who are committed to developing this solution and are dedicating their energy and resources to ViewPoint.
