Why did you choose science as a career?

I chose a career in science because it allows me to glimpse into the secret world of our cells and learn about the basic core of our biology at a molecular level. A career in science allows me to face new challenges and constantly improve my skill set. I love the diversity of tasks and topics I've encountered over my career.

Why are you passionate about what you're working on?

I joined Coda Biotherapeutics to help find new therapies for chronic neuropathic pain. Chronic pain is debilatating and greatly detracts from a person's quality of life. If we can help improve quality of life and allieviate suffering then I have made a difference in someone's life.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to young women in the life science sector?

In my experience, I have had a pretty equal distribution of male and female co-workers and supervisors, so I have yet to feel as though I am working in a "boys' club." However I still benefitted from strong female role models and mentors to help me navigate work and life expectations. Be confident, speak up, use your resources, network, do informational interviews with people who are in a position you might want to be in one day, but most importantly enjoy yourself. If you do not love what you are doing, find what makes you happy - science or not.
