Why did you choose science as a career?
From a young age I was fascinated with nature and loved animals. I always wanted to understand how things work, so studying science was a natural choice. During my studies I saw how much potential applied science has in improving our lives and the world around us and chose to pursue a career as a scientist.
Why are you passionate about what you're working on?
We started SyntheX to unleash nature on drug discovery. By utilizing genetic engineering and evolution, we have created cellular factories to make and screen drugs for us. I am very excited by the prospect of harnessing the power of synthetic biology to innovate treatments that improve human health, it’s a fast-growing field that will only continue to amaze us.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to young women in the life science sector?
It is the best time in history for women to be in science. With all the support networks and resources available to us, it has never been a more welcoming space. I would advise young women starting out to pursue whatever their career interests may be and not be afraid to reach out to others for help – you miss 100% of the chances you don’t take.
