Providing a state-of-the-art research and development infrastructure, the new Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS (‘JLABS’) site is designed to maximize natural light and our collaborative space is tailored to the way today’s scientists work together to generate new ideas, build partnerships and collaborations, and find solutions for patients, consumers – and all of us.
Without further ado, we welcome you to JLABS @ Washington, DC, inviting you to explore the space along with our vision to help foster open scientific innovation.
We Think Differently About the Identity of a Scientist & Entrepreneur
JLABS @ Washington, DC aims to reflect the transformation of science and research over the last decade. A previously closed world, today’s innovators work better together. JLABS @ Washington, DC is the epicenter for convening and action-oriented innovation. Our high-tech site includes 32,000 square feet of lab, prototype, office and conference room space, providing millions of dollars of laboratory instrumentation and specialty equipment to support our portfolio of companies, all located on the new Children’s National Research & Innovation Campus in Northwest Washington, D.C. The JLABS site is embedded within a building that will also be home to Children's National Research Institute, and its long-partnered research group from Virginia Tech.
We Bring the Inspiration of Outside, In
JLABS @ Washington, DC is part of the Children’s National expansion to a 12-acre portion of the historic Walter Reed Army Medical Center campus. Walter Reed dates back to 1909 from its original location at Fort McNair on the DC waterfront and with views of the Virginia shoreline, offering access to the outside world and picturesque landscapes to help aid the recovery of sick soldiers. To honor this vision and Walter Reed’s service to veterans for more than a century, JLABS @ Washington, DC mixes accessible outdoor terrace and garden areas adjacent to open programming space featuring an interactive digital wall, and encircled by built-for-purpose conference rooms and laboratory areas. Mindful of an innovator’s limited time, the campus’ strategic location also offers unmatched proximity to relevant healthcare federal agencies, as well as decision- and policy-makers in the nation’s research and scientific center of excellence.
We Believe that New Ideas Can Gain Strength from Historic Buildings
JLABS @ Washington, DC embraces the historical elements of the space, showing off the original bones and infrastructure and reminding us all of the strong foundation on which we grow. Built to house up to 50 start-up companies from across the pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer health and health technology sectors, it’s also an incredibly modern facility.
We Incorporate Our Partners and Our Shared Mission
Our site captures our shared mission to help prepare for the imagined and unimagined possibilities of the future. We’re proud to collaborate with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) on BLUE KNIGHT™. The joint initiative aims to stimulate innovation and incubation of technologies that improve health security and response through companies focused on public health threats and emerging infectious diseases. Blue Knight will offer opportunities in addition to the JLABS model, to provide additional support to these specific portfolio companies, such as: fee assistance for JLABS residency for entrepreneurs and companies, and mentorship from BARDA. And with the Blue Knight hub at JLABS @ Washington, DC, the space will also provide dedicated equipment including high-end specialty research capital equipment.
We Mix Different Types of Innovators in the Same Space
