Sean Clayton | Partner, Cooley
Sean M. Clayton's practice focuses on the representation of public and private emerging growth companies in general corporate matters, as well as a wide range of transactions, including public offerings, venture capital financings and M&A. Sean advises public companies with respect to securities laws and SEC reporting obligations, disclosure issues and corporate governance matters. Past and current public company clients include ACADIA Pharmaceuticals, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Arena Pharmaceuticals, Flexion Therapeutics, Horizon Pharma, Insys Therapeutics, MannKind, Mirati Therapeutics, Optimer Pharmaceuticals, TRACON Pharmaceuticals and Vical.

Michele Comtois | Principal, Marsh Executive Liability Practice
Michele Comtois is a principal with over 14 years’ experience in the insurance industry. She has served as a member of Marsh Agency’s (MARSH) Executive Liability Practice since 2005.Michele has a background in finance and risk management and works directly with clients by providing strategic guidance and counsel in the areas of public company directors and officer’s liability. Prior to joining the firm, Michele was a senior underwriter at Arch Insurance Group in San Francisco where she served in the Executive Assurance Group. During her tenure there, she developed a book of business consisting primarily of public and private company D&O and professional liability insurance. She also worked in the financial services field in Boston. Michele is a founding member of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s San Diego Chapter. She currently holds board positions with the San Diego Venture Group and Athena San Diego. Michele serves as the chair for GROW, a women's initiative focused on attracting, retaining, educating and supporting the women of MARSH. Michele earned a BS in business administration with a concentration in finance from the University of Vermont.

Dylan James | AVP Western Region, Nasdaq
Dylan James is a West Coast based AVP for Nasdaq. Dylan’s team leads client relationships with all 700+ Nasdaq listed companies in the Western Region, including the five largest companies in the US by Market Capitalization. In addition, Dylan works with private and pre-public companies in San Diego and Northern California on behalf of Nasdaq’s new business team. Dylan has been with Nasdaq since 2007, and previously worked at an Investor Relations consultancy in addition to holding business development roles at Thomson Financial and Reuters. Dylan is a graduate of Notre Dame DeNamur University and is the former President & Board member of the San Francisco Chapter of NIRI (National Investor Relations Institute).

Cheston Larson | Partner, Latham & Watkins
Cheston Larson serves as Chair of the office’s Emerging Companies Practice and is Co-chair of the firm’s Life Sciences Industry Group. Mr. Larson has extensive experience in SEC disclosure and reporting requirements, Nasdaq and NYSE compliance, and executive compensation and equity incentive matters. Mr. Larson routinely counsels clients in the life sciences, software, telecommunications, cleantech and other technology industries. Mr. Larson is recognized by Chambers USA 2017 for his work in Capital Markets: Debt & Equity and Life Sciences: Corporate/Commercial. In 2015, Best Lawyers in America named him “Lawyer of the Year” and selected him for inclusion in the 2013 & 2014 editions in Securities/Capital Markets Law. The Legal 500 US 2016 recognized Mr. Larson in the area of Life Sciences and in 2016, Mr. Larson was recognized as an “Advisor of the Year” by BNY Mellon Wealth Management. Mr. Larson was named a “Life Science Star” for finance and transactional work by LMG Euromoney Life Sciences 2015 & 2016. He was also recommended as one of the Top 20 California lawyers under the age of 40 by the Daily Journal. In law school, Mr. Larson was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and worked for the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s Enforcement Division as part of Harvard’s Clinical Practice Program.

Hugh Leslie | Principal, Marsh Life Science and Medical Device Practice
Hugh Leslie is co-Global Lead of the Life Science and Medical Device Practice Group where he is recognized as a top nationally ranked broker. As the team lead, he is responsible for overseeing all aspects of his clients’ programs and is dedicated to the successful implementation and long-term stewardship of their accounts. Hugh works with clients of all sizes from startups to international publically traded firms. Prior to joining the firm, Hugh was a national account lead for a carrier, working with Fortune 500 companies and leading a team of 25 people. Hugh has served on the Junior Board of the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito for the last four years and is on the Board of the Cardiff 5K for the last eleven years. Hugh graduated from Miami University.

Bruce Rucks | Audit Partner, Deloitte
Bruce is a partner in the audit practice at Deloitte & Touche LLP. Bruce serves health sciences clients, with a focus on life science companies. Bruce has 14 years of public accounting experience, throughout which he has served a variety of clients in the life sciences industry, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies as well as health care providers. Bruce’s clients have filled the entire spectrum of company maturity, from Fortune 100 and multi-national companies to closely held emerging growth pre-IPO businesses. His clients served include companies specializing in biotechnology, traditional pharmaceuticals, biologics/biosimilars, diagnostics, and injectable therapies, among others. Bruce has assisted clients with IPO proceedings, acquisition due diligence, and SEC filings. His clients include companies that utilize simple ERP systems through companies that utilize fully integrated ERP systems. Additionally, Bruce is also a member of the national Deloitte life sciences industry practice. His responsibilities include consulting with engagement teams on industry-specific accounting and auditing matters, communicating emerging accounting and auditing issues within the Deloitte life sciences practice, and developing and delivering life sciences trainings/materials and literature for distribution internally and externally. Additionally, Bruce is active in the life sciences community including speaking at numerous industry conferences.

Jason Spark | Managing Director, Canale Communications
Jason mixes a background in science with 15 years of experience in life science business communications. His experience covers corporate communications, investor relations and public relations for early stage private startups, as well as for commercial-phase publicly held companies. He has led corporate brand communications, investor communications, M&A communications and crisis communications programs, and has spearheaded successful campaigns around FDA approvals and product launches. Due to his work developing award-winning investor and public relations programs, clients have received widespread recognition through top-tier placements in print, broadcast and online media. Prior to joining CanaleComm in 2010, Jason was a vice president in the life sciences division of Porter Novelli’s health care practice. Jason was one of the original employees at Atkins + Associates, a life science communications agency that was later acquired by Porter Novelli. Previously, he served as a regional marketing representative for the Varsity Group, an agency deploying strategic marketing campaigns for organizations such as Ben & Jerry’s and Habitat for Humanity. Jason holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a major in biology and a minor in economics.
