Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Innovation, New York State (NYS), and the New York Genome Center (NYGC) are launching JLABS @ NYC, thanks to $17 million in funding from NYS. The 30,000-square-foot facility will be located at the NYGC in SoHo (just two blocks from the Holland Tunnel), and will open in 2018.

JLABS has a series of QuickFire Challenges, offering early-stage companies funding or lab space or both. They have launched 17 challenges so far, 10 of which are now closed, and seven of which are currently in progress or soon to open. They have awarded close to US$2.4 million in the first 10 challenges and will give a further US$1 million in research grants in the next seven challenges. All this money is non-dilutive funding which means that startups do not have to give up equity in exchange for the prize.

San Diego’s characteristics drew the attention of Johnson and Johnson Innovation, a subsidiary of the health care products giant, which chose the region to launch its biotech incubator. Called JLABS, it provides logistical support for young companies, while keeping J&J in touch with new ideas. The business of healthcare is in Tom Luby’s blood.

It started during a childhood often spent in a family room in the back of his parents’ pharmacy listening to them interact with patients and their caregivers. Those experiences led him to a biology degree at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh and a PhD in immunology at Tufts University in Boston.
