Our JLABS @ Toronto story:
In May 2016, Toronto became the sixth JLABS site and the first to be located outside the U.S. Situated right in downtown Toronto within the MaRS Discovery District, North America’s largest urban innovation hub, JLABS @ Toronto is surrounded by researchers, investors, government and entrepreneurs, all supporting the advancement of healthcare innovation.
JLABS @ Toronto supports over 50 resident companies and has over 20 alumni companies within its network. Companies advancing consumer products, therapeutics, medical devices, health tech and cross sector focuses make up the vibrant JLABS @ Toronto resident and alumni community. The current resident demographic reflects the region’s leadership in the fields of artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, oncology and vision care.
JLABS @ Toronto is the JLABS for Canada. With 43% of resident companies coming from outside the GTA, from places like Halifax, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary, we provide a second “home-base” for R&D and management teams. JLABS @ Toronto also brings external and internal Johnson & Johnson expertise to over 15 cities across the country through educational programming, webinars and speaking engagements.
JLABS @ Toronto includes dedicated space for BLUE KNIGHT™, a collaboration between Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). Blue Knight aims to stimulate innovation and incubation of technologies that improve health security and response through companies focused on public health threats and emerging infectious diseases. Every JLABS location features state-of-the-art laboratory instrumentation and equipment—what new resident companies need to get up and running on day one.
This capital efficient model takes time and investment needed for laboratory space out of the equation, eliminating the normal setup typically required of a life science start-up. We even provide training on equipment like 3D printers, UPLCs, FPLCs, FACs, among others.
