Emerging technologies in AI, IoT, and 3DP may shape the future of healthcare in China and beyond. To improve health outcomes, advancing digital technology innovation could be central to China’s Health 2030 mandate. Furthermore, the 2019 Future of Health Index identifies China as a ‘forerunner’ in adoption of new technologies in healthcare.
Unlocking the promise of health technologies could be the key to bringing forward transformative potential breakthroughs for the patients who need them most.
To that end, Johnson & Johnson Innovation together with Johnson & Johnson Medical Shanghai are proud to introduce the Digital Technologies of Tomorrow QuickFire Challenge. Visionaries are invited to submit novel, medical device ideas with the potential to transform patient care in AFIB, neurovascular treatments, orthopedic and general surgery.
The innovator(s) with the best idea(s) will receive grant funding from a total of up to $100,000, one year of residency at JLABS @ Shanghai, and mentorship from experts of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies.
Areas of Interest
We encourage applications from entrepreneurs & innovators working with the aim to harness medical device technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D-printing, IoT, 5G, and beyond in diagnostics, perioperative treatment solutions, and emerging and transformative technologies, related specifically to:
- AFIB: How can we leverage digital technologies with the aim to identify patients and refer them to the appropriate physicians? How can we trace patients for remission after treatment?
- Neurovascular Treatments: How can we detect signs/ risks of stroke for early treatment?
- General and orthopedic surgery, including distant operating stage support and AI-enabled procedure planning: How can we drive more effective potential perioperative solutions (including pre-, intra- and post-surgery) with emerging technologies? How can we apply innovative, untraditional material to orthopedics surgery?
- Residency at JLABS @ Shanghai including workstation and access to the JLABS ecosystem
- Mentorship from experts of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies.

Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of reviewers and judges on their ability to meet the following criteria:
- Problem space and potential impact
- Ability to drive immediate impact beyond current solutions
- Uniqueness of potential solution & level of competition in the current market
- Quality & feasibility of the potential solution to commercialize within 12 months
- Team credibility & capabilities
- Clarity of plan: milestones & defined go/no
- Potential impact on Chinese ecosystem

No, a patent is not required to apply. However, you should not submit any information that you wish to keep confidential or that may negatively impact upon the future patentability of your invention.
