An estimated 20 million nurses and midwives around the world — the equivalent of more than 50% of the healthcare workforce[1] — are the backbone of health systems worldwide, with invaluable hands-on patient experience, resourcefulness and an innate innovative mindset, bringing forward powerful ideas on how to help improve patient outcomes and healthcare. We are proud to help bring these ideas to life.

The recent Future of Nursing 2020-2030 Charting a Path to Health Equity report, Accelerating Nursing, Transforming Healthcare research and Tri-Council report highlight the need for a robust, diverse, engaged nursing workforce, empowered to innovate and lead transformative change, driving increased efficiency and improved patient outcomes.

Health technology can be critical to this transformation. The implementation of technology to augment the workforce and enhance the workplace has become increasingly omnipresent in the nursing profession. Robotics, artificial intelligence, remote monitoring or communication, 3-D printing, Internet of Things, portable diagnostics, and virtual reality are just some of the examples of how technology can and hopefully will augment and support the nursing workforce to ultimately strengthen healthcare delivery and outcomes. And as care continues to extend beyond hospital walls to wherever patients reside, the need for nurses to be ready and able to leverage technology will escalate.

We are proud to continue the Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge series with an eighth Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenge together with the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) and the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). Focused on “Healthcare Transformation Through Nurse-led Tech,” we look to nurses to create technology-based potential solutions that aim to drive healthcare transformation, enhance the patient experience, improve the health of populations, reduce per capita costs, and enhance the caregiver experience amid the current pandemic environment and beyond.

The nurse innovators with the best idea(s) will receive up to $100,000 in grant funding and access to mentoring from experts across the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies to help bring their ideas to life.

As innovators on the frontlines of healthcare, nurses have the power to profoundly change lives. Johnson & Johnson has the scale, resources, and know-how to help move them forward. Put these two together, and that changes everything.

What we’re looking for

We invite nurses and nursing students worldwide to bring their experiences, ideas, and insights to help create nurse-led technologies, tech-enabled protocols devices or treatment approaches that can help drive healthcare transformation including but not limited to tech that aims to:

  • Improve patient care and outcomes in any disease state or care setting
  • Create efficiencies for nurses, leading to more high touch, high value interactions with patients, and extending their reach
  • Up-skill nurses and student nurse education to improve patient care delivery and outcomes in varied care settings, including remote care (e.g., Virtual Reality (VR), Sim Labs, etc.)
  • Support data driven decisions and/or integrates social determinants of health (SDOH) data to help address health inequities and reach underserved patient communities.
  • Improves patient and nursing support by expanding nursing workforce opportunities. Examples include expanding connectivity between nurse retirees and mentors through virtual support.

Why this challenge matters to us

Nurses have been critical to the practice and delivery of healthcare in public health events throughout history, such as the Spanish flu, HIV and Ebola epidemics, and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past year, once again nurses have answered the call for crucial healthcare leadership, as longstanding barriers to care delivery were broken down, health care policies shifted, and innovative new approaches to care delivery were developed. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have led the way to help meet the evolving needs of our healthcare system.

While our healthcare system has been ripe for change, the pandemic has also exposed areas of opportunity to further support, strengthen and elevate the nursing profession, so that they can in turn help develop a stronger healthcare system.

Nurses, at the heart of the care continuum, with broadly-based skill sets and unique patient insights, can have the needed perspective on how technology-based potential solutions can help drive healthcare transformation.

Evaluation Criteria

Potential solutions will be evaluated by a panel of reviewers and judges on their ability to meet the following criteria:

  • Potential impact on human health
  • Uniqueness of the idea
  • Feasibility of the idea and potential path to commercialization
  • Thoroughness of approach
  • Identification of key resources and plan to further idea

Can I submit supporting documents (for example a video) as part of my application?

You will have the opportunity and are encouraged to upload supporting materials such as non-confidential slide decks, research papers, and videos as part of your application. You may submit a video along with your typed responses. Maximum length is 2 minutes. Make sure that you do not submit any information that is non-proprietary or owned by a third party.

Is it ok if some of the information I submit is confidential?

Do not submit confidential information. Only non-confidential information should be submitted and anything you submit will be treated as non-confidential.

What happens with IP (Intellectual Property)?

As this is a no strings attached arrangement, JLABS does not acquire any IP.  Any IP creation and/or protection remains the sole responsibility of the inventors.

Is a patent required to apply?

No, a patent is not required to apply.  However, you should not submit any information that you wish to keep confidential or that may negatively impact upon the future patentability of your invention, or that is not proprietary considered a trade secret or privileged.

Who is eligible to apply?

Each Challenge has its own terms & conditions that we require you to accept, and that can be found prior to filling out the application.

Which stage of innovation are you interested in for Johnson & Johnson Nurses Innovate QuickFire Challenges?

We are interested in tangible innovations at a variety of stages – including ideation, prototyping, piloting, and commercial launches. Submissions should align to our areas of focus and not be limited include to academic research projects.

What types of ideas are you interested in?

Submissions should have path to commercialization. While ideas can be early-stage, we are not looking for research projects not pursuing a viable potential solution.

What are the specific criteria for application?

Potential solutions will be evaluated by an external? panel of reviewers and judges on their ability to meet the following criteria:

How can grant funding be utilized?

Applicants are asked to detail their intended use of funds as part of that QuickFire Challenge application and how they anticipate the funds will accelerate their solution forward to achieve the milestones outlined in their application.  The grant funding must be used solely for the legitimate advancement of the innovative solution as described in the QuickFire Challenge application.  For the avoidance of doubt, below is a non-exhaustive list of impermissible uses of the grant funding:

  • Brick and mortar costs
  • Lobbying, including but not limited to, grass roots lobbying
  • Provisions of healthcare services (e.g. direct patient engagement via a telehealth service)
  • Pass throughs to healthcare providers and/or government officials/employees (e.g. used for the salary of an HCP)
  • Payment towards past development activities (e.g. payment of business loan)

There are no specific rates or percentages that are allowable or not allowable with regards to overhead, etc. That said, all applications are evaluated on the impact the funds will have and milestone achievements. A progress report including details about the use of funds is required at the conclusion of the award period.
