Why did you choose science as a career?

I was always fascinated by how sophisticated the human body is and was interested in using engineering tools to solve problems of high clinical impact that will radically change the lives of patients. As a principal investigator at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and a Principal Research Scientist at MIT, I can work with a diverse team of interdisciplinary scientists on understanding fundamental mechanisms controlling tissue:biomaterial interactions and develop means to diagnose and treat diseases. We can then take the most promising technologies and form start up companies that will bring our inventions to realization and make a real difference.

Why are you passionate about what you're working on?

The ability to tackle the most pressing unmet clincial needs with engineered solutions is a process that is extremely creative, satisfying and has the potential to improve human health.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to young women in the life science sector?

Believe in yourself. Know that you can make a difference. You can be heard. As women, particularly in engineering, we are less likely to identify a role model that is in a similar situation to ours, and hence, we may be discouraged from pursuing our dreams. Go for it.
